Homemade Apricot Carrot Eye Cream: Recipe

At a girls' night last week we were talking about how, now that we've hit our 40s, our bodies are quickly and notably shifting. We each agreed that the skin around our eyes is starting to droop, on all but one of us. An unusual and sudden pang of jealously struck me - the skin around her eyes was tight and glowing, in contrast to mine that was feeling saggy and dull. She commented that she uses eye cream twice weekly. Really? That's the simple solution? Within two days, still in my fit of self-destructive criticism, I went to Glover Street Market to find ingredients to make eye cream.

Ingredients:
3 tsp jojoba oil
3 tsp apricot-kernel oil
1 tsp beeswax
5 tsp rose water
1/4 tsp borax
5 drops carrot-seed essential oil

Directions:
  1. Place the jojoba oil, apricot-kernel oil and beeswax in a small saucepan and heat it over low heat until the beeswax has melted.
  2. Remove the mixture from heat and quickly blend all the ingredients with a whisk.
  3. In a second saucepan, warm the rose water over low heat. A add the borax. Stir until the borax has completely dissolved. Set aside.
  4. Gently the saucepan containing the oils and wax in a shallow ice bath. Be sure not to splash water into the pan. Slowly drizzle the rose water and borax into the mixture, rapidly whisking as you do so. The cream should set quickly.
  5. When the cream is cool, mix in the carrot-seed essential oil.
  6. Transfer the cream to a small glass jar and store in your refrigerator for 2 months.
I love this eye cream, but can't say my eyes look any younger yet!

  10. thanks for these great tutorials!
I have no knowledge about home made cosmetics, so I am not sure about why Borax? is it the one you find in the laundry detergents aisle?
Could I do without it in this recipe?

    Thank you!!

    1. Here's a great write up on Borax: http://www.crunchybetty.com/getting-to-the-bottom-of-borax-is-it-safe-or-not
An alternative to borax would be to use emulsifying wax. Some people argue (although I think Borax is natural) that the more Borax you use in your lotion, the more your skin will crave the Borax-based lotion. I don't agree. However, if that's a concern, the emulsifying wax can be used as a substitute.
