Oil diffusers are simple and inexpensive to make with just a few common products, and they last a long time. They can be decorative as well as fragrant, and you can recycle your decorative glass bottles. Here is the tutorial:
Materials Needed:
- Small glass bottle with a narrow neck (1/2 the length or less of the diffuser reeds) - the more narrow the neck the better as this will force the oils to travel up the reeds to diffuse their scent rather than evaporating up through the neck
- 1/4 C. Carrier oil
- Essential oil of choice
- Splash of vodka
- Diffuser reeds (available at most craft and hobby stores, although bamboo skewers from grocery stores work just as well)
Instructions:
- Pour carrier oil into the glass bottle.
- Add 12 drops essential oil.
- Add vodka to the oil mixture
- Place the reeds in the oil mixture, and let them sit for one hour.
- Remove reeds, turn them upside down, and stick the opposite ends into the oil.
- Rotate the ends of the reeds or skewers once each week to refresh and prolong the fragrance.

Wow - I never knew how to make these myself. Thank you for this helpful tutorial.

DeleteOh my gosh! This is so creative. I love it! I've been wanting an oil diffuser, but the Yankee candle ones are so expensive. I'll definitely try this on my own. Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteI know it - isn't amazing what you can for half the price of what those products would sell for? I love discovering new DIY projects. Thank you for your comment!
DeleteHi Nicole - I've tried this myself in the past but was missing the magic vodka ingredient! Do you have a suggestion for which carrier oil to use? Steph
ReplyDeleteHi Steph,
DeleteI used Safflower oil, but I think Olive oil would work just as well. Thanks for stopping by!
Can you use almond oil or vegetable oil as the carrier oil? Just looking at what i have in the house...
ReplyDeleteYou certainly can - check out this helpful link on carrier oils: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier_oil
