I have seen a lot of posts on making your own coconut butter. Rawmazing inspired me to try. Following are images of the very simple process.
Homemade Coconut Butter
Pour 16 oz organic, unsweetened, dried coconut into a food processor. Blend for 10 minutes.
After 2 minutes...
After 4 minutes, the oils are beginning to release...
After 6 minutes...
After 8 minutes, it looks almost done, but keep processing for another couple of minutes to get the last little chunks...
After 10 minutes, you're done! Transfer to a glass jar and let cool. It will harden into butter when it cools.
This is a fraction of the cost of coconut butter when purchased in a store. Your 16 ounces of dried coconut should make over 2 cups of coconut butter. Enjoy!
Nice!!
ReplyDeleteDo you know if this will work with reduced fat coconut?
ReplyDeleteIt should since it stil contains oil. The oil released makes the butter. You might not produce the same quantity, but it should still work. Good luck, and please let me know how it turns out!
Deletewas it bitter at all? mine turned out really bitter, but smelled really good!
ReplyDeleteInteresting!
DeleteI went to do some research to see what might have gone wrong with yours since mine always turns out sweet, and found these comments on another blog about how to make coconut butter.
Comment:
"This may be a silly question, as I know we all have different personal tastes, but what exactly is the coconut butter supposed to taste like? Sweet or bitter? I made it using coconut from the bin at my local health food store. It was NASTY. I mean I had to eat something to get the taste out of my mouth. I was so disappointed because everyone raves about how delicious it is!! I like coconut so I don’t know why I didn’t like the coconut butter."
Response:
"I think something may have been wrong with the coconut you bought. The butter should taste sweet – like melted coconut goodness. So sorry. I promise it really is delicious…as long as your coconut is fresh."
I'm not sure what might have happened, but I hope that doesn't discourage you from trying again with a different batch of coconut!
